The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia has awarded $488,430 in scholarships to more than 130 students in Northern Virginia, investing in the next generation of leaders for Northern Virginia, and beyond. These scholars were honored at a private event at Northern Virginia Community College on July 12, 2022.

The scholarships are valued between $1,500 and $5,000, with some awards renewable through all of college study. The average amount awarded was about $3,500 per student.

The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia has awarded $613,735 in grants to 50 local organizations through its 2022 Community Investment Funds, Environment Fund, and Ross-Roberts Fund for the Arts, helping respond to need and seed innovative solutions to complex social problems across the region.

Funds are invested in organizations across Northern Virginia in the areas of Aging, Child and Youth Development, Education, Environment, Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, Mental Health, Military Personnel and ther Families, and Safety Net to Support Basic Needs. This represents the largest ever discretionary grants cycle in the Community Foundation's History.

On March 15, 2022, The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia held its annual Shape of the Region Conference. This convening highlighted the complex barriers to basic mental health service, such as therapy, helpful medications, and others. Over 300 persons attended, about half in person, and half online, from a cross-section of civil society including but not limited to government workers, nonprofit and foundation employees, social changemakers, private sector businesses, and representatives from state, local, and national government offices. The conference also discussed what innovative ideas and opportunities may exist to address this critical issue that impacts us all.

Insight Region^TM Report to be Launched

Please note that on March 15, 2022, Elizabeth Hughes, Senior Director of Insight Region™, The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia’s Center of Community Research, will present the findings in the report Finding our Way Back to Mental Health at the annual Shape of the Region Conference. This conference will highlight the complex barriers to basic mental health service- therapy, helpful medications, early interventions, and so on. The conference will feature multiple panels of national and local experts for candid discussions of the challenges of accessing basic mental health services in Northern Virginia, and what innovative ideas and opportunities may exist to address this critical issue that impacts us all.

The CIF is the signature grant cycle managed by the Community Foundation in which funds are invested in organizations serving the Northern Virginia community in the areas of aging, child and youth development, education, intellectual and developmental disabilities, mental health, military personnel and their families, and safety net support.

January 12, 2021 (Oakton, VA) – The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia is accepting applications for college scholarships for the 2022 - 2023 school year. Eligible students include high school seniors and undergraduates in Northern Virginia.

Community Foundation manages 13 scholarships and administers the funds for 21 other scholarships that support Northern Virginia students pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Oakton, VA (January 6, 2022) – The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia, a leader in philanthropy in the region announced today it has awarded $119,900 in grants to 11 local organizations in the third round of grants from its Afghan Relief and Resettlement Fund for Northern Virginia. Each organization received a grant between $9,900 and $20,000. The grants will support Afghans who fled their country and who either pass through or are resettled here in Northern Virginia.

December 22, 2021 (Oakton, VA) – The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia’s Business Women's Giving Circle (BWGC) today announced the winners of its annual grant cycle. A total of $55,000 in grants has been awarded to three local nonprofit organizations and schools that provide STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math), Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Mentorship programs to girls and young women in Northern Virginia. To date, BWGC has awarded more than $415,000 in grants that have impacted the lives of over 3,250 girls and young women in the region.

The Innovation Fund uses a venture philanthropy model of grant-making in which donors to the Innovation Fund, in partnership with the Community Foundation find investment opportunities in Northern Virginia.
