Making a Difference/Kathy Hwang Memorial Fund

Making A Difference
On November 21, 2012, the entire Ashburn community suffered a tremendous loss with the sudden passing of Sanders Corner Elementary School’s beloved principal, Kathleen Hwang. Not a day goes by that we don’t miss her and mourn her loss. But as our school and community continue to move forward, we are reminded daily of the legacy she left behind.

As a lifelong educator, Kathy found great joy in working with children and those who taught them. She began her career in the public school system as a teacher in Virginia Beach and later became a principal and administrator. In 2005, she transferred to Loudoun County Public Schools and became principal of Sanders Corner. Kathy created a culture of excellence and teamwork involving all stakeholders – students, staff, parents, business partners and community members. She can only be described as a hard-working, effective, instructional leader that brought out the best in those around her.

“Read to the Principal”

One of the most beneficial programs Kathy brought to Sanders Corner was the “Read to the Principal” program. It was her goal each year to have every student come to her office and read. They read a book or something they had written and in return, Kathy took each student's picture, displayed it on a bulletin board, gave them a special “I Read to the Principal” button, and allowed the students to select a book to take home. The children loved to read with Mrs. Hwang and it created awareness to the students that reading is important. This program truly made a difference for each child.

Fundraising Event

On November 13, 2016, the Ashburn Community will be holding the fourth annual Making a Difference 5k, The Kathy Hwang Memorial Walk/Run. Proceeds from this event will go toward sharing Kathy’s legacy and to keep the lessons she instilled in the community alive. We are committed to expanding the “Read to the Principal” program county-wide. We also want to continue to promote Kathy’s vision for instructional improvement by supporting staff development in select sponsored schools. We want to make a difference – one school at a time.
