To relieve the suffering caused by poverty in Northern Virginia

The Community Foundation establishes priority funding areas within each fund.  For 2019 the Community Foundation will consider applications in the following categories.  Applications that do not fall into these categories will not be considered.

Organizations or programs that provide assistance to people affected by poverty, including shelter, eviction/foreclosure prevention and other emergency assistance.  Proposals in the following areas will be considered:
  • Housing/Shelter
  • Eviction/Foreclosure Assistance
  • Other non-food related Emergency Assistance
In an effort to support food programs in the region, the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia will continue working in partnership with the Capital Area Food Bank to support family markets in our region. Therefore, we will not be supporting additional food programs in this grant cycle.
Criteria: The Community Foundation will consider grant applications that meet the following criteria.
  • Applicants must be 501(c)(3) organizations providing charitable or educational services. Local, state and federal government entities are not eligible to apply.
  • Grant requests for capacity building, program or general support purposes will be considered. Funding may be used to support, expand or enhance existing programs or to start new programs. Applications for capital improvements, endowments, or scholarship awards will not be considered.

Designate "Poverty Relief" when making a Community Investment Funds donation to support this critical need.

“The surprising and sad truth is that 85,000 children in Northern Virginia live in poverty.  The Poverty Relief Fund at the Community Foundation supports some of the most critical food pantries, homeless shelters, weekend food programs for children, and basic needs assistance programs in the region.  It is a growing part of the safety net that helps our neediest neighbors.”
