An Endowment to Shape our Region's Future

PermFund LogoThe Community Foundation for Northern Virginia is a visionary funder that has directed millions of charitable dollars to people in need since 1978. We have established The Permanent Fund, an endowment to shape our region’s future that responds to critical need, seeds innovation, and leads the community with thoughtful, effective philanthropy. Your contribution to The Permanent Fund creates a lasting legacy of giving to transform lives and strengthen Northern Virginia.

The Case for the Permanent Fund

NORTHERN VIRGINIA IS ONE OF THE MOST DESIRABLE PLACES TO LIVE, WORK AND PLAY IN THE ENTIRE COUNTRY.

With nearly 375,000 of our residents living at or below 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Level, however, the need for The Permanent Fund has never been as great.

Every hope for the future depends on our community’s capacity to find innovative solutions to complex issues, champion promising causes, and support our most vulnerable populations. The Permanent Fund will be the primary source of that capacity. As a permanent, flexible, and resilient source of philanthropic capital, it will shape our region’s future, together.

Help Shape the Future of the Region!

The Permanent Fund provides an opportunity for you to create a lasting legacy of giving to transform lives and strengthen Northern Virginia. Our work is only possible when our community comes together with a common resolve—to raise the quality of life for all and to create lasting change for our region.

BEQUEST

bequestA bequest is a gift from your estate. You can make a bequest to The Permanent Fund for Northern Virginia by including language in your will or trust. Bequests constitute 80% of all planned charitable giving in America, so they are an easy, proven, and effective way to leave a lasting legacy of giving.

BENEFICIARY DESIGNATION

beneficiarydesignationA beneficiary designation describes how your assets will be distributed upon your passing. It is often easier to make a charitable gift by completing a beneficiary designation form provided by your account administrator than it is to visit your attorney and update your will. Some of the more common assets that transfer through beneficiary designations are retirement accounts like IRA’s, 401(k)s or 403(b)s, savings accounts, checking accounts, mutual fund accounts, or life insurance policies.

INDIVIDUAL RETIREMENT ACCOUNT (IRA)

iraMany of today’s retirees have amassed considerable wealth in their IRAs, more wealth, in fact, than they need for daily living or long term care. And for those with substantial estates, much of their IRA wealth will go to estate taxes and income taxes of non-spousal beneficiaries, leaving some heirs with less than 50% of the IRA assets that are left to them. For these reasons, you may want to use your IRA as a current source of charitable gifting to The Permanent Fund.
