High net worth families are looking to be generous with their wealth; philanthropy is a topic most of them want to explore with their advisors. However, surveys of high net worth individuals and their advisors show that the practice of addressing charitable giving in client meetings is not consistently implemented. Furthermore, families are not completely satisfied with the conversations they are having with their advisors on the topic.
What accounts for the shortfall? What is the advisor’s role in these philanthropic conversations? Should it be broader than advising on how to saves taxes or set up giving vehicles like trusts, donor-advised funds, and foundations? What are clients looking for?
In this forum, Josh Stillman, CFP®, CAP®, Capitol Financial Consultants, Inc. and Melinda Merk, JD, LLM, CFP®, AEP®, McCandlish Lillard, will offer some thoughts on how best to implement philanthropic discussions into client meetings, increase client satisfaction with these conversations, and to help you help clients realize their philanthropic potential.
