Displaced Medical Professionals Assistance Fund

The Displaced Medical Professionals Assistance Fund provides grants to nonprofit organizations that assist displaced medical professionals in offsetting tuition, fees, and other expenses associated with receiving training and/ or accreditation in healthcare- related disciplines in the United States.

A note from the founder of the fund:

I was delivering a donation to an apartment complex where many refugees and asylum-seekers are being resettled when I met a very kind man. Let’s call him “Sami”. He volunteered to assist me in lifting heavy supplies, and we started talking about his story and what had brought him to the United States.

Sami told me he had worked as ICU doctor in the Kabul State Hospital Annex and that he had fled Afghanistan because of the many threats to his life received because of his work helping Americans. He had escaped with his wife and children and only a bag of belongings. Everything else was taken from them, including his medical career. “I have to forget l was a doctor”, he plainly added. He cannot afford the expensive and time-consuming recertification process to become licensed to practice medicine at any level in the US so he makes ends meet with Door Dash and Amazon deliveries. Trying to forget he was a doctor helps him accept his new reality.

This fund is to help Sami, and all other medical and healthcare professionals, who came here from other countries in seek of refuge, and who are faced with the arduous reality of re-building a life from nothing. We need their talent, and they deserve to be given the opportunity to restart their healthcare-related careers.
