The First Center for Community Research in Northern Virginia

Insight Region^® is the very first Center for Community Research in Northern Virginia and across the Commonwealth. It has evolved to become the go-to source for reliable analytics, stronger community insights, and better outcomes. Launched in a bold and unusual step by the Community Foundation in March of 2020 just as the pandemic was emerging, Insight Region’s unique view of the issues that unfolded during the pandemic served our community, and our Community Foundation, very well. It enabled a deep understanding of the disproportionate impact of the pandemic on our low-income families, communities of color, immigrant communities, and minority business owners, and translated the seismic shifts caused by the pandemic into a language we could all understand.

Over the years Insight Region has also revealed some astonishing and previously unpublished data about the people and families who live here. For example, in Unequal Burden, we found that low-income families in Northern Virginia have the worst housing cost burden in America. Spreading the Wealth had some good news to share, revealing that Northern Virginia is home to some of the most economically mobile children in the entire country. And in Finding our Way Back to Mental Health, we discovered that of the 2.5 million residents of Northern Virginia, 750,000 adults have mental health needs with 370,000 of them wanting therapy or counseling they can neither find nor afford.
