Philanthropy Panel 2025

At a time when the philanthropic landscape is shifting, CFNOVA and Truist brought together a dynamic panel of experts to explore how donors can make the most of their giving in 2025 and beyond. The conversation was rich with insights, strategy, and heart — all centered on one key theme: giving with purpose in a changing world.

We’re grateful to our board member, Amy Wells Mackay, for leading such a thoughtful and dynamic conversation.

📈 Market Momentum Meets Generosity

Chris Komosa, Senior Investment Manager at Truist Wealth, opened with a hopeful message: despite economic uncertainty, earnings have grown 50% over the past three years. “This is the time to be generous,” he shared. With bonds and stocks performing well and no recession on the horizon, donors have a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact.

📜 Tax Law Clarity and Strategic Giving
Mike Frost, Senior Adviser and Planning Strategist with Truist Wealth, unpacked the implications of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), which brings stability to the tax code for the next four years. He emphasized that 2025 is a pivotal year for charitable giving:

  • The SALT cap increases to $40,000 in 2025, offering more flexibility.
  • In 2026, new rules will limit charitable deductions — making 2025 the ideal time to give.
  • Donors can maximize their impact by gifting appreciated assets like stocks and ETFs, which offer tax-free gains and full-value deductions.
  • Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs) are increasingly used for major gifts, while Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) remain a smart strategy for retirees.

🏛️ Foundations Evolving for Greater Impact
Sarah Dovere, Senior Director of Advancement for the National Center for Family Philanthropy, shared how family foundations are reimagining their roles:

  • Purpose is shifting toward community-driven missions.
  • Pace is accelerating — with 70% of foundations giving beyond the required 5%.
  • Practice is evolving — embracing multi-year grants and deeper partnerships with nonprofits.

🌍 Giving Where You Live Matters
Renée Byng Yancey, President and CEO of the Community Foundation, reminded us of CFNOVA’s core mission: supporting local nonprofits that are responding to urgent community needs. Her message was clear — local giving is powerful, and CFNOVA is here to guide donors in making the most meaningful impact.

🎯 The Takeaway
As we look ahead to 2026, donors face a “perfect storm” of market opportunity, tax law changes, and growing community needs. CFNOVA is committed to helping fundholders and partners navigate this moment with clarity, strategy, and heart.

Now is the time to give boldly. Give locally. Give with purpose.
