2022 Annual Report

Northern Virginia is in an extraordinary moment of renewal. The local economy is driving the entire region's growth with a record surge in entrepreneurial startups and many more job openings than can be filled. There is a palpable sense of interconnectedness, creativity, and rebirth. It is a time of rousing renewal for the region, and for the Community Foundation as well- as we've worked on addressing the mental health needs of Northern Virginians, and adopted a strategic plan around four pillars of engagement- social and economic mobility, racial justice and equity, inclusive systems of economic growth, and community resilience.

Each page of this annual report reflects the gift of community resilence, a generous donor base, an abiding desire to help, and a growing capacity to do so.

2020 Annual Report

The past year has tested pretty much everything we are as human beings, as a country, and as a local community.  The Community Foundation therefore spent considerable time during 2020 in response mode, helping the region address not one, but two crises – the COVID-19 pandemic and racial injustice.

This annual report outlines the many ways the Community Foundation responded to need, seeded innovation and led and convened the community this year, including record levels of grantmaking, the launch of Insight RegionTM, a center for community research, and a new Build Back Dream Forward initiative that helps address the impacts of the virus on communities of color in the region.

2015 Annual Report

We do nothing alone at the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia. We have learned that the only way to further our mission of growing philanthropy to help meet the most critical needs of the community is to partner with like minded individual, corporate, and foundation donors. The desire to partner for greater impact is embedded in our culture and is a prime directive of our current strategic plan. This Annual Report therefore highlights the many examples of how, when, and to what effect the Community Foundation has developed partnerships in the past year that actually level the playing field for our neediest neighbors, relieve the suffering caused by poverty, and advance the region through philanthropy.

2013 Annual Report

Engaged philanthropy. If one idea summarizes the thinking of today’s donors, that is it, and it is the theme for the 2012-2013 Annual Report. The Community Foundation’s individual, corporate and foundation donors are united in their desire to give back to the community. They want their contributions to have an impact, to make a difference. They seek to help our neediest neighbors while also creating opportunities for the next generation. But donors want to do so much more than give. Engaged philanthropy includes financial support, personal involvement, and a deeper knowledge and understanding of the critical needs of our region.
