We Make More Possible…for Northern Virginia
Dear Friends,
At the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia, Making More Possible is far more than a theme. It is a driver, a motivator, an ethos reflecting the impact we achieve together.
With your support, the Foundation awarded more than $1 million in regional grants and scholarships, fueled by growing endowments that strengthen our ability to respond to community needs. We took the pulse of the nonprofit sector and launched a capacity-building series to support organizations beyond the grants, ensuring they have the tools to thrive in a changing landscape.
We convened conversations that matter—from the Shape of the Region Conference, which focused on the health and safety of our youth, to the Raise the Region Gala, celebrating visionary leadership and philanthropy. We also redoubled key partnerships with community leaders and professional advisors, to help their clients and stakeholders achieve meaningful philanthropic goals.
Every story in this report reflects what’s possible when we work together: more opportunity, more resilience, and more hope for every member of our community. Thank you for being part of this journey.
Your trust and generosity make more possible for Northern Virginia—today and for generations to come.
Warm regards,

Hear from our partners
Compassion in Action
Linda Carr believes no family should ever have to choose between food, housing, or safety. Through her donor-advised fund and the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia’s expert guidance, she turned that belief into action by supporting Second Story, a nonprofit providing housing and wraparound services to youth and families in crisis. This is what happens when compassion becomes impact—and when the Community Foundation helps make more possible.
Philanthropy with Purpose
Marc Wishkoff , a trusted advisor and former CFNOVA Board Member, helps his clients align their values with their giving. Partnering with the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia, Marc has helped build a legacy of generosity—supporting causes from basic human needs to military families. One recipient, Serving Together, demonstrates the quiet power of this partnership by improving the lives of veterans and their families in our region. This is how CFNOVA makes more possible.
Opportunity for All
Beatriz McNelly’s journey from Argentina to Northern Virginia is one of resilience, entrepreneurship, and purpose. Through her fund at the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia, she is helping create access to jobs, expand education and career readiness opportunities, and open doors for neighbors with disabilities—impact amplified by grantee Year Up. Her story reminds us that the American Dream is alive, and that together, we can make it possible for youth across our region.
MEETING THE MOMENT
From July 2024 to June 2025 as demand increased and resources tightened, CFNOVA expanded grantmaking, convened community leaders, and invested in long-term capacity - helping nonprofits, students, and families navigate challenges and build resilience.

INSIGHT REGION®
Insight Region® , the Community Foundation’s research center was launched in 2020, and provides actionable data and shared takeaways on critical local issues.2024-2025 Reports:
Towards Social and Economic Mobility
The Towards Social and Economic Mobility report highlights that Northern Virginia’s Route 1 corridor ranks among the lowest in regional opportunity, underscoring the need for targeted investment. Through a three-year, $200,000 trust-based grant partnership with United Community, CFNOVA supported initiatives like Lived Experience Consultants, amplifying community voices and improving access to resources for families in need.
- Key Fact: Nearly 27,000 children in Northern Virginia experience food insecurity, and youth deaths by suicide have increased 45% since 2010, underscoring urgent challenges in health and well-being.
- Summary: This Insight Region® report reveals how demographic shifts, economic pressures, and mental health concerns are shaping the lives of Northern Virginia’s youth. While educational attainment remains high, disparities persist, and rising issues like housing instability, electronic bullying, and opioid misuse demand renewed focus. The report calls for cross-sector action to ensure every young person has the resources, stability, and opportunities to thrive.

Nonprofit Pulse Survey
In March 2025, the Community Foundation conducted its Nonprofit Pulse Survey among applicants to the Community Investment Funds to better understand nonprofit needs and the anticipated funding landscape for the year. More than 100 applicants completed the survey, which revealed significant uncertainty about future federal support, with nearly half of respondents receiving some level of federal funding and most indicating that reserves would be depleted within a year without new revenue. While 62% of organizations reported having contingency plans—such as diversifying funding or reducing programs—the findings underscore the financial vulnerability and adaptability of Northern Virginia’s nonprofit sector.
Insight Region Deep Dives
In 2024–2025, the Community Foundation’s Insight Region® Deep Dive Series brought together educators, policymakers, parents, and community leaders for three virtual sessions exploring the state of youth in Northern Virginia. The series examined key issues published in A Portrait of Northern Virginia’s Youth, including youth demographics, school safety perceptions, mental health challenges such as death by suicide risk, and substance use trends—providing relevant insights and fostering cross-sector collaboration to improve outcomes for children and youth.
Impact: 209 (more than 200 attendees)

- Presented in partnership with Katharyn Loweth, MS
- Health & Safety of Children & Youth – January 2025

BEYOND THE GRANTS SERIES: Nonprofit Capacity Building
In 2024–2025, the Community Foundation launched the Beyond the Grant Series to strengthen organizational resilience and effectiveness across Northern Virginia. This three-part series provided practical, no-cost learning opportunities on topics such as:
- Thought Leadership and Fundraising to navigate trends in philanthropy and engage donors
- Communications That Cut Through the Noise to help nonprofits stand out in a crowded and polarized environment, and
- Financials Q&A for Grant Applications to clarify budget, balance sheet, and reporting requirements. Designed to equip nonprofits with actionable strategies, the series supported stronger fundraising, clearer communications, and sound financial management for long-term impact.

Bridging the Gap: The Impact of ‘Last Dollar’ Scholarships
Benton Fisher, a Northern Virginia local and an economic consultant at FTI Consulting, has long championed community-driven causes. Long before he founded his donor-advised fund, the Avalon Charitable Fund, with the Community Foundation, Benton was the child of a Naval officer and a Unitarian minister. This upbringing ingrained an interest in service and has shaped his philanthropic endeavors ever since. Benton’s journey toward philanthropy was further influenced by his time coaching his children in team sports, which fostered his passion for leadership and collaboration. These experiences taught him that the most meaningful rewards come from uplifting others.
Benton and Joan Fisher, with their two children
"...Our family joined hundreds of others who have made the Community Foundation the base camp for the philanthropic journey through the donor advised funds. In addition, we've been able to use the Community Foundation's resources to identify nonprofits. As a board member on a scholarship fund outside the Community Foundation, I've been able to call on Renée and her staff with many questions about best practices, about operations, and so their resources are used by all. It's so valuable to have them available to us." - Benton Fisher, on the We're Good Podcast

Your Trusted Advisor for Responsible, Sustainable Growth
At the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia, we steward private capital for public good with a clear purpose: to make more possible for generations to come. In FY25, our investment portfolio delivered a 17.9% total return, reinforcing our commitment to responsible, long-term stewardship.
Here for the Long-Term
Our commitment goes beyond today’s needs. By encouraging endowments and diversifying funds beyond donor-advised options, we strengthen the region’s capacity to respond to future challenges. The Permanent Fund for Northern Virginia is central to this vision, serving as the source of discretionary grants that address the most pressing needs today, and seeding that source of philanthropy for future generations.
Stories of Partnership

Environment Fund: $1 Million Endowment Mark
Each year, thousands of individual donors passionately support causes close to their hearts through the Community Foundation. Although we may never meet some of those individuals, we know how much of an impact they can make. For instance, we recently received an anonymous gift that pushed our Environment Fund past the $1 million endowment mark. This is the first issue area focused fund to reach this milestone! Given that such funding enables critical opportunities for our region, we are ecstatic over this milestone and the generosity required to reach it.
A Legacy of Encouragement and Giving: Beth and Jim’s Story
Driven by a passion for breaking barriers and empowering others, Beth Wadle’s journey to becoming a legacy donor of the NVTC Foundation Kilberg Scholarship Fund is truly inspiring. As a young woman, fields like math and science were not considered a traditional career path. Nevertheless, she pressed on, and her determination earned her two engineering degrees. She went on to a more than 30-year career as one of the few women in her field of choice, the intelligence community. Although she was often the youngest person in the room during that time, Beth used her standing to encourage other women to follow in her footsteps and pursue STEM careers.
ANSER Community Giving Fund honors long-time Board Member
When ANSER launched their Community Giving Fund in partnership with the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia, the goal was clear: to make a meaningful difference in the communities where its employees live and work. For the inaugural grant cycle, ANSER chose to honor one of its own—Tom Apperson, Senior Advisor at Avalon Net Worth, a dedicated Board member who served for more than 20 years and retired this November.JOIN US: Make More Possible

2025 Shape of the Region Conference
On March 25, 2025, the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia convened its annual Shape of the Region Conference, bringing together leaders from business, government, education, and the nonprofit sector to address one of the most urgent priorities for our region. This year’s focus was on the health and safety of Northern Virginia’s youth.
In partnership with 16 regional anchor institutions across all sectors, we explored critical challenges facing young people—including bullying, school safety, substance use, and access to mental health care—while spotlighting solutions that can create lasting impact. At the heart of the conference was the launch of our Insight Region® report, A Portrait of Northern Virginia’s Youth 2025. This research delivers essential data on youth well-being, equipping policymakers, educators, and community organizations with the insights needed to drive meaningful change.
Expert panelists unpacked the report’s findings and shared practical strategies to improve mental health services, expand access to resources, and strengthen community resilience—ensuring that every young person in Northern Virginia has the opportunity to thrive.

In October 2024, CFNOVA held its Elevate NOVA People’s Supper, a unique gathering designed to foster meaningful connections across differences. This initiative brought together Northern Virginia residents from diverse backgrounds—different races, cultures, faiths, and political perspectives—for an evening of conversation, understanding, and shared humanity.
The People’s Supper is rooted in the belief that dialogue builds bridges. By creating space for honest, respectful conversations, CFNOVA helps strengthen the social fabric of Northern Virginia and advance its mission of building a more inclusive, resilient community. These conversations don’t just happen at the table—they ripple outward, inspiring collaboration and empathy across our region.
Community Impact Celebration 2025
On June 5, 2025, the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia hosted its annual Community Impact Celebration, honoring the generosity and vision of donors who make transformative work possible across our region. This event celebrated the collective impact of philanthropy through the 2025 grants and scholarships cycles – a total of more than $1M in awards throughout the region and beyond—highlighting stories of lives changed, communities strengthened, and opportunities created through CFNOVA’s grants and initiatives.
The evening recognized the power of partnership and the role of every donor in advancing a thriving, inclusive Northern Virginia. Together, we are building a foundation for long-term resilience and making more possible for generations to come.
