On October 16, 2026, the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia welcomed 400 community leaders, philanthropists, nonprofit partners, and supporters to the Raise the Region Gala at the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner for an inspiring evening celebrating community, philanthropy, and impact across Northern Virginia. Hosted by NBC4's Tommy McFly, the evening was a celebration of community, philanthropy, and impact, but it was also something more: a defining night for Northern Virginia. Throughout the program, guests were reminded that the strength of our region is built by individuals who choose to step forward, give generously, and invest in the communities they call home. Through a collection of powerful "I am" statements shared throughout the evening, attendees reflected on the many roles they play in shaping our region and how individual actions, when combined, create meaningful change for the greater good.
The Community Foundation was proud to honor Gil and Liz Blankespoor and Inova Health with the Community Leadership Awards. Gil and Liz were recognized for their longstanding generosity, visionary leadership, and dedication to improving the quality of life throughout Reston by way of life-changing scholarships and mentorship to deserving students. Inova Health was honored for its unwavering commitment to advancing the health and well-being of our communities, with President and CEO Dr. J. Stephen Jones accepting the award on the organization's behalf. Throughout the evening, stories of impact and generosity underscored the power of philanthropy to address critical community needs and create lasting change.
Guests enjoyed both silent and live auctions led by Capital Benefit Auctions, whose energy and expertise helped make the evening a tremendous success. The spirit of the evening reached its peak in a CFNOVA record-breaking Stand Up and Give, raising an extraordinary $130,150 and demonstrating the remarkable generosity and commitment of those who care deeply about Northern Virginia's future.
In one of the night's most memorable moments, Gil Blankespoor challenged attendees to think differently about the legacy they hope to leave. "Why wait?" he asked, encouraging others to make an impact while they are still here to witness the difference their generosity can make. His message perfectly captured the spirit of Raise the Region: each of us has the power to create positive change, and together, those individual commitments build a stronger, more vibrant Northern Virginia.
