William J. Foreman Scholarship“We believed the best way to honor our beloved son, Will, and allow the light of his beautiful spirit to shine on was to start a scholarship in his name. With the wonderful guidance and support from CFNOVA, we were able to accomplish this most meaningful tribute. Providing the opportunity for other deserving young people, who had overcome significant adversity, to pursue a better and brighter future through higher education seemed a most fitting legacy.  From the awarding of the very first scholarship nineteen years ago to 67 scholarships later, we continue to passionately embrace the sentiment expressed by Marian Wright Edelman: “Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it.” – Louise Foreman.

Anam Malik, a Justice High School alum and aspiring neurosurgeon, will begin a new chapter this fall at George Mason University. Anam is one of the 2025 recipients of the William J. Foreman Memorial Scholarship, a meaningful step that brings them closer to her academic and professional goals.

Anam’s story is one of remarkable strength and determination. Inspired by her late mother, a delivery nurse who passed away when Anam was just one year old, Anam has long held a deep desire to follow in her footsteps. “My mom inspired me to pursue the medical field,” Anam shared. “Ever since I moved to America, I’ve known I wanted to continue the path she started.”

The scholarship has provided more than financial support—it has offered peace of mind. For Anam and her family, it means less stress about tuition and more focus on learning and growth. “This scholarship is a step closer to college and my dream. I cannot wait to start college and explore a new chapter of my life.”

When asked what advice they would give to other students facing adversity, Anam offered powerful words:

“Never let another person interfere in your life. You are the owner of your life. If someone tells you to do something, put it in one ear and take it out the other.”

Thanks to the generosity of donors, the William J. Foreman Memorial Scholarship Fund continues to uplift students like Anam—those who persevere through challenges and pursue her dreams with courage and determination. A gift to the fund is an investment in the future of Northern Virginia’s youth, helping them thrive through education and opportunity.

About the
William J. Foreman Memorial Scholarship

The scholarship fund was launched in 2007 by Louise and Mark Foreman, to honor the memory of their son Will Foreman, who was tragically killed in an automobile accident on February 24, 2006. Will had a generous heart, a loving spirit, and was drawn to helping those less fortunate than himself. He had faced personal adversity during his high school years, but successfully overcame it to graduate and begin college studies in computer science.

The William J. Foreman Memorial Scholarship Program, sponsored by the Foreman family, is administered by the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia (CFNOVA). Donations to the program continue to be accepted in Will’s memory and are applied 100 percent to the scholarship fund.

The support of this scholarship and all of the Community Foundation’s scholarships comes from many generous donors who partner with the Foundation to invest in our region’s students.
