Northern Virginia’s Nonprofit Sector: Essential, Evolving, and Under Pressure

Northern Virginia’s nonprofit sector is more than a network of service providers—it is a cornerstone of the region’s economic and social infrastructure. These organizations create jobs, drive innovation, and deliver critical services that support upward mobility, community well-being, and regional resilience. In fact, the sector generates more than $1.6 billion in annual economic activity, underscoring its vital role in the region’s economy.

But today, nonprofits are being stretched to the breaking point by a volatile economy, rising demand, and shrinking public support. This latest Insight Region® report from the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia, developed in partnership with George Mason University, explores the current state of the nonprofit sector and the urgent need for investment in its long-term sustainability. It includes new data on the sector’s economic impact, insights into the challenges nonprofits face, and actionable recommendations for funders, policymakers, and civic leaders. The report also highlights the cost of inaction—underscoring how weakened nonprofit capacity could lead to increased burdens on local governments and communities.

Now is the time to stand with nonprofits and ensure they have the tools, funding, and partnerships they need to thrive.
