Grants Awarded in 2019

2018 CIF Grantee RecipientsGrants of $404,792 were issued to 41 local organizations and non profits in 2019 in the areas of Child and Youth Development; Education; Health, Mental Health, and Aging; Poverty Relief; and Military Personnel & Their Families.  This is a record amount awarded through the Community Investment Funds grant cycle and will help local organizations respond to critical need throughout Northern Virginia.

Military Grantees

Child and Youth Development

Arlington Arts Center**, $6,500
Serving Arlington County
This grant will support two programs serving at-risk youth: an after-school art enrichment program at Carlin Springs Elementary, a Title 1 school, and a program for preschoolers, offered in conjunction with Bridges to Independence, a local non-profit serving homeless families.

BMDMoveMeFest2019 LRBowen McCauley Dance Center**, $10,000
Serving Arlington County
Funding will support school dance programs serving diverse, low-income students in Northern Virginia and an annual MOVE ME Festival.

Communities in Schools of NOVA, $10,000
Serving Alexandria
The grant will be used to enhance academic improvement, family engagement, and career college readiness supports.

Fairfax County Park Foundation, $10,000
Serving Fairfax County
Funding will provide general support to FCPF to cover salaries for 8 staff counselors and directors for the PACT program.

Girls on the Run of NOVA***, $10,000
Serving Fairfax County
Funding will support program expansion and access to the GOTR program to girls along the Richmond Highway Corridor.

Higher Achievement***, $10,000
Serving Alexandria
Funds will be used for Higher Achievement’s year-round out-of-school time program in Alexandria which supports academic achievement and social-emotional growth of students in grades 5 – 8.

Hispanics Against Child Abuse and Neglect***, $10,000
Serving Fairfax County
Funds will be used to continue implementing the LEER+ program which supports literacy growth and makes sure families are thriving through establishing a relationship of trust and support.

INMED Partnerships for Children, $10,000
Serving Loudoun County
Funding will support INMED’s academically-focused after-school program for at-risk children.

Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, Inc.*, $6,000
Serving Prince William County
This grant will enable approximately 600 under-served elementary school students from Manassas City public schools to participate in the Virginia Outreach Education program.

Liberty's Promise, $10,000
Serving All of Northern Virginia
The grant will make it possible for up to 150 low-income, immigrant youth to learn about American civic life in Northern Virginia, as well as acquire job skills and college-access training, through their after-school programs of civic engagement.

STEM Guitar Students MFL LRMusic for Life**, $10,000
Serving Fairfax County
Funding will help provide music education programs to 60 low income students at Mount Vernon High School in Fairfax County during the 2019-2020 school year (20 students in each of three programs.)

National Inventors Hall of Fame*, $10,000
Serving Prince William County
This grant will engage 45 or more Prince William County underserved youth, grades K-6, in Camp Invention – a high-quality STEM enrichment program that builds critical thinking, self-confidence, entrepreneurship, collaboration, and other 21st century skills.

Northern Virginia Family Service***, $10,000
Serving Fairfax County
Funding will allow NVFS to conduct twelve, week-long School Specific Groups for at least 30 recently immigrated youth at Francis C. Middle School and West Potomac High School who need support facilitating a healthy transition to their new community.

This grant will support a 6- week intensive Summer STEM program followed by a ten-month after-school program for 12-14 girls in 3rd-5th grade at the Gum Springs Community Center.

This request will support The House Student Leadership Center’s afterschool EmpowerMEnt® initiative through program support for 300 marginalized youth through leadership development, training, mentoring, and co-curricular elective opportunities.

Funding will provide general support for comprehensive programming to low-income adult immigrants striving for English language proficiency, employment, self-sufficiency, and family stability.

The grant will support the Emerging Leaders Program which enhances the leadership abilities of low-income youth from Latino and immigrant backgrounds.

Falls Church-McLean Children's Center, $10,000
Serving Fairfax County
This grant will provide an effective, early education program for young children to overcome the skills gap that results from growing up in poverty, from having parents with limited English skills, or from developmental delays that are interfering with their ability to learn.

Loudoun Literacy Council, $10,000
Serving Loudoun County
This grant will provide general support funding for programs and operations to promote literacy in Loudoun County.

Main Street Child Development Center, $10,000
Serving Fairfax County
Funding will support Main Street’s preschool program, particularly to provide mental health, behavioral, and special needs services to students and provide teachers with the necessary resources and training to be successful.

OAR of Fairfax, $10,000

Funding will support OAR’s Work Empowerment Program for criminal justice involved adults in Fairfax, Prince William, and Loudoun County.

Funding will support Learn & PlayGroups™ which are designed for vulnerable, isolated families of children 0-5 who lack access to quality, affordable early childhood and parenting programs.

Funding will help CFNC prepare 138 at-risk, four-year old children and immigrant families to thrive in kindergarten; reduce language, health, social-emotional, and socioeconomic barriers to learning; and empower parents to advocate for their long-term success in school and in life.

The Literacy Lab***, $4,637

This grant will help The Literacy Lab create a literacy safety net that ensures disadvantaged English Language Learners in grades K-3 in Alexandria have access to the reading support they need.


Health, Mental Health and Aging

PRS, Inc., $17,900
Serving Fairfax County
This grant will provide funding to PRS CrisisLink CareRing, through which phone calls are provided to clients for social support while also assessing risk for depression, suicide and cognitive decline through scheduled contacts either daily or several times throughout the week.

Rebuilding Together Arlington/Fairfax/Falls Church, Inc., $17,900
Serving Fairfax County
This grant will support the Rebuilding Together Express (RT Express) program to help more low-income homeowners age in place safely and comfortably by providing small teams of 4-5 skilled volunteers to complete half-day projects throughout the year to deliver targeted repairs.

Funding will support the Easterseals Veteran Staffing Network: Securing Fulfilling Careers for Veterans and Military Spouses.

Melwood Horticultural Training Center, Inc., $13,000
Serving All of Northern Virginia
This grant will provide funding for Melwood’s Vets Ready2Work Program. The program provides workforce development and vocational support services for veterans in Northern Virginia in need of employment.


Poverty Relief

The grant will support the Daily Emergency Financial Assistance Program. All funds will be used to provide same-day emergency assistance to prevent eviction, homelessness, and other catastrophes for an additional 60 Arlington County households who are facing a short-term crisis.

Funding will support Britepaths’ Financial Assistance Program which provides emergency rent, utility, pharmaceutical, and car repair assistance to low and middle-income clients.

This grant will support families experiencing homelessness through emergency shelter and comprehensive support services at the Family Home in Arlington.

This grant will support general operating funds to support prison-to-community reentry services tailored to women’s unique needs.

Friends of Loudoun Mental Health, $10,000
Serving Loudoun County
Funding will support Loudoun County residents who have a serious mental illness with housing subsidies to provide safe, stable and affordable housing.

Funding will support the Neighborhood Revitalization program in the East End Mobile Home Park in the City of Manassas.

Mobile Hope, $10,000
Serving Loudoun County
This grant will support the emergency lodging needs of our Homeless Youth Emergency Support program.

Offender Aid and Restoration of Arlington, Inc., $10,000
Serving All of Northern Virginia
The grant will provide housing assistance to individuals who are returning home to Arlington County and the Cities of Alexandria and Falls Church after incarceration.

Project Mend-a-House*, $10,000
Serving Prince William County
Funding will support continued home repair services to the vulnerable population living in Prince William County and Greater Manassas areas. Repair services will include accessibility, modification, plumbing, electrical & other home repair need.

Rebuilding Together Alexandria, $10,000
Serving Alexandria
Funds will be used to help provide assistance to people affected by poverty through support of the Alexandria-based Safe and Healthy Homes program.

Tahirih Justice Center, $10,000
Serving All of Northern Virginia
Funding will support programs that protect immigrant women and girls in Northern Virginia who are fleeing gender-based violence.
