Healthy Kids Grants

Healthy Kids Grants are awarded each year to individual public schools in Northern Virginia that implement a program or strategy to encourage better nutrition/ more physical activity, or better mental health among their student body during the school year. In its thirteenth year, the 2023 grants review committee has awarded $28,535 to fourteen school programs.  Healthy Kids Grants are made possible by the Avalon Charitable Fund, the Chin Family Charitable Fund, the Minton Family Charitable Fund, and the JOY Charitable Fund, all of which are component funds at the Community Foundation.

The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia announces several grants made to organizations through multiple discretionary funds, including the Afghan Refugee and Resettlement Fund, Business Women’s Giving Circle, Healthy Kids Mental Health Grants, the Loudoun Impact Fund, and the Micron Opportunity Fund. These grants, amounting to more than $200,000, will increase equity by supporting educational opportunities, increasing access to social and economic support, and helping strengthen community resilience for residents across the region.

Healthy Kids Grants have traditionally been awarded in the spring and summer for public schools in Northern Virginia that use the funding for a program that promotes nutrition and physical activity. In 2022, the Community Foundation added a grant cycle focused on support for schools offering their students mental health care programming. This is especially pertinent, as rates of youth seeking mental health care treatment have increased, accelerating a pre-pandemic trend. Healthier kids through access to exercise and better nutrition are the goals of the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia’s Healthy Kids Grants program. For 2021, the Community Foundation has awarded $18,981.93 in Healthy Kids Grants to 10 public Elementary and Middle School programs in Northern Virginia. Grants up to $2,000 will be used to support programs that promote healthy lifestyles through increased exercise or healthy nutrition. The grants are for the 2021-2022 school year.

Parkour, virtual yoga, outdoor gardening, the truth about dieting, and nutrition and sugar are just some of the projects represented by this year’s Community Foundation for Northern Virginia’s Healthy Kids Grants recipients. Seven public Elementary, Middle, and High School programs were recently selected after a competitive application process to receive grants up to $2,000 to support programs promoting healthy lifestyles through increased exercise and physical activity or healthy nutrition. The grants totaling $10,212 are for the 2020-2021 school year.

The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia awarded $20,245 in Healthy Kids Grants to address the main causes of childhood obesity by supporting programs that increase physical activity and/or improve nutrition in Northern Virginia public schools. The 2018-2019 school year is the eighth annual Healthy Kids grants cycle, with a total of $138,245 awarded to date.

The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia awarded $17,700 in Healthy Kids Grants to address the main causes of childhood obesity by supporting programs that increase physical activity and/or improve nutrition in Northern Virginia public schools. The 2017-2018 school year is the seventh annual Healthy Kids grants cycle, with a total of $118,000 awarded to date.

The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia awarded $30,300 in Healthy Kids Grants to address the main causes of childhood obesity by supporting programs that increase physical activity and/or improve nutrition in Northern Virginia public schools. The 2016-2017 school year is the sixth annual cycle, with a total of $100,300 awarded to date. Healthy Kids Grants are made possible by grants from the Chin Family Charitable Fund and the J.O.Y. Charitable Fund, donor advised funds with the Community Foundation.
